A person callously throws their glasses behind them. The whole while, they are smiling.

Are you thinking about undergoing LASIK to correct your eyesight? Although LASIK is an incredibly effective surgery, it’s important to know how best to take care of your eyes during recovery. Learn what not to do after receiving LASIK, and how to get the LASIK outcome you’ve been looking for: better vision.

24 Hours After LASIK: Go to your post-operative appointment

After getting LASIK, it’s extremely important that you attend your first post-operative appointment. Because of the surgery, you will not be able to drive yourself, so you’ll need to find someone to drive you. At the appointment, your doctor will check to make sure your eyes are healing properly, and have you set up additional post-operative appointments for 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months out, depending on what your doctor recommends. After the first post-operative appointment, most patients can go back to driving themselves, but ask your doctor if you are unsure.

1 Week After LASIK: Avoid contact sports & eye products

A week after receiving LASIK, it’s normal for your vision to fluctuate, especially day to day. During this healing period, you may experience halos, and difficulty with night vision. These are usually short-term symptoms that will go away on their own. Although you can resume exercise, contact sports must be avoided. Contact sports can cause injury to the newly operated upon eyes, and must be avoided until healing is complete. Another thing to avoid are all makeup products, like creams, lotions, and eye shadows. These can lead to infection or improper healing, so it’s best to avoid them until your doctor gives you the okay.

3 Weeks After LASIK: Contact sports can usually be resumed, vision should begin to even out

3 weeks after LASIK, you can begin resuming contact sports like swimming, although eye protection is highly recommended. Other every day activities like gardening, mowing the lawn, and outdoor activities can be resumed as well. If you’re going to be outside for an extended period, make sure to protect your eyes with sunglasses that block UV rays. Do not be alarmed if your vision continues to fluctuate, or if you have a sensitivity to light and abnormally dry eyes. These symptoms should pass with time, but it’s a good idea to continue using artificial tears if your doctor has prescribed them to you.

6 Months After LASIK: Vision should be improved, enjoy freedom from contacts and glasses!

In the 6 months after your LASIK procedure, your eyesight should be at its prime. You no longer require the use of contacts and glasses, and have returned to your everyday activities. To keep your eyes as healthy as possible, you’ll be required to attend more post-operative appointments. It is also normal to continue to see small fluctuations in your vision as healing continues.
