Why Cataract Surgery?

Cataracts can impact your ability to read, write, watch TV, drive, or recognize the faces of people you love. Once they have fully developed, cataracts affect your quality of life.

Surgery is the most effective treatment for cataracts. During laser cataract surgery, your cataract surgeon removes the cloudy lens. This lens is then replaced with an artificial lens, known as an IOL.Patients undergoing cataract surgery are given numbing medication, making the procedure pain free! Cataract surgery is performed one eye at a time.

Each eye takes about an hour to complete. At Georgia Eye Associates, patients who need cataract surgery on both eyes are scheduled separately. This is to ensure the first eye has plenty of time to heal. During laser cataract surgery, your cataract surgeon will use a laser to make a small cut in the front of the eye.

Take the Self-Test

Georgia Eye Associates, located in Buckhead, Tucker, Lawrenceville and Braselton is proud to be one of the first practices in the Atlanta region to offer all laser cataract surgery. Traditional cataract surgery has been performed for years and remains a safe and effective way to remove cataracts, but the new LenSx laser system allows for a much more precise and accurate procedure, and better visual results.

While all human eyes share the same basic anatomical structure, every eye is just a bit different in terms of size, depth, curvature of the cornea and other key features. This is why every eye must be carefully measured and mapped prior to cataract surgery. While these measurements have been routinely performed prior to surgery, the LenSx Laser uses a range of highly advanced technologies including integrated optical coherence tomography (OCT) to capture incredible precise, high-resolution images of your eyes. These images and the measurements and data they provide are then used to plan and perform a surgery to exacting specifications not attainable with traditional surgery.

The Best Lenses

Today there is a choice of what kind of lens a patient can have to replace the cataract lens. Premium implant lenses, or bifocal lens implants as they are sometimes called, are special implants that greatly reduce or eliminate the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery.

There are four types of state-of-the-art lenses – the PanOptix Trifocal Lens, the multifocal, the accommodating, and the toric intraocular lens (IOL). Premium lens implants work to focus light at multiple focus points, creating clear sight at the distance, intermediate, and near zones. If seeing clearly after cataract surgery without the dependency of glasses or contacts is of interest to you, consult with the doctors of Georgia Eye Associates and ask which lens is right for you.

Introducing the Light Adjustable Lens

The Light Adjustable Lens, also known as the LAL, is a unique IOL that is used to replace your natural lens during cataract surgery. It is composed of a unique photosensitive material that responds to ultraviolet light.

During cataract surgery, the natural lens is removed, and the Light Adjustable Lens is implanted in the eye, just like any other IOL. After the eyes have healed from cataract surgery, eye doctors can use a special device called a Light Delivery Device, which emits controlled doses of ultraviolet light.

In response to this light, the Light Adjustable Lens will change shape, thus fine-tuning its power. Although you may need a few light treatments to reach your desired vision, this process allows you to fully customize your vision results.

Why Should I Choose the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens offers several advantages over traditional IOLs. Its customizable nature means that vision can be precisely adjusted to suit your individual needs, potentially reducing or even eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses after cataract surgery.
